Wien, 2 Mai [1906]

Sehr geehrter Herr!

Hochachtungsvoll ergeben

Vienna, May 2, [1906]

Dear Sir,

I have just telegraphed 1 regarding your request, 2 agreeing with your suggestion. It would be a good idea now to face the consequences of that in the remaining gatherings and maintain the numbering, especially where (as in, e.g., the last batches of proofs that I sent you) I have designated "144a" or "144b" and so forth. I hope it is not too late for this.

Kind regards, Your devoted

Footnotes

1 = CA 20 of 9:50 a.m. the same day.

2 There is no letter (original or carbon copy) surviving from Cotta to Schenker between February 7 and May 31, and no record of any other communication. (Schenker did not at this time use the telephone.) The "wish" was perhaps communicated by a marking on a proof. — It should be noted that in his diary for April 22, 1906, Schenker recorded: "Anmerkung über Monodie fürs Buch nachgetragen." ("Commentary on monody for the book added."). This commentary appears at the end of § 88, on pp.209–19 (= Eng. transl., pp.163–73), and provides a brief history of the development of polyphony and harmony, discussing Italian monody on pp.218–219 (= Eng. transl., pp.172–73). Schenker may be referring to the whole commentary, or just this final part.
