I saw it coming, but matters beyond my control 2 ‒ namely illness on the part of my mother ‒ prevented my doing anything about it. You will have a handsome package of galley-proofs back in 3–4 days' time. 3

1 This must be a reply to OJ 9/31, [21], December 30, 1908, in which Cotta sought the return of galley-proofs 1–89.

2 "wegen einer vis major": lit. on account of a superior force.

3 In WSLB 33, January 1[?], to Universal Edition, Schenker complains that because of having to write four new paragraphs for the revised Introduction to the new edition of his Instrumentations-Tabelle (paragraphs that Universal Edition then deemed too long to be included), "that I had to take out of the time for the proofs of volume II," i.e. Kontrapunkt.
