OJ 9/34, [30] - Handwritten letter from Cube to Schenker, dated January 16, 1932
— © Transcription William Drabkin, 2008 |
Enclosed is the notice you asked for. 2 I am enclosing a letter, which will shed light on the music editor's attitude; please return it to me. 3 My planned article cannot appear until early spring. By way of compensation, Dzialas for his part told me that Dr. Karl Holl 4 would, in the meantime, review your books. This has now been done. © Translation William Drabkin, 2008 |

Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/5, p. 3698, January 18, 1932: "Von Cube (Br.): schickt die Bepreschung in der Frankf. Ztg (Rottenberg) vom 19. XII. 31 u. einen Brief seines Oheims" (From Cube (letter): sends the review in the Frankfurter Zeitung (Rottenberg) of December 19, 1931 and a letter from his uncle."). 2 A review of Das Meisterwerk in der Musik, by Ludwig Rottenberg, mentioned by Cube in a lost letter of December 1931, and requested by Schenker in OJ 5/7a, [41], January 14, 1932. See Schenker's reply, OJ 5/7a, [42], January 20, 1932. 3 The letter was written by Otto Vrieslander, as shown by the related diary entry. In his next letter (OJ 5/7a, [42]), Schenker thanks Cube for showing him "the Uncle's" letter, "Uncle" or "Uncle Otto" referring always to Vrieslander. Dzialas is presumably the editor of a journal or newspaper in which Cube is hoping to publish an article; Vrieslander's letter supplies a report of Dzialas's character. 4 Karl Holl was a music critic for the Frankfurter Zeitung in the 1910s and 20s. Many of his pieces were kept in Schenker's collection of newspaper clippings (OC 2). |
