The Jew (99)
A farmer who calls hearth and home his own admittedly does not understand how another man ‒ who, unlike himself, does not have hearth and home ‒ justifies his existence, and, even if he is a minster or someone of similar rank, imagines hearth and home to be a social minimum. ... The Jewish nation, too, is lacking in hearth and home, so to speak; and accordingly all other nations deny her, on the grounds of such a superficially natural peasant-like outlook, the justification for her existence in this world. As if the "spiritual property" of the Bible etc would not more than necessarily compensate for the material possession of this or that tiny speck of earth! Europe ‒ a big peasant ruffian still in the 19th century! [draft in Heinrich's hand in Ser. B, p. 7, heavily edited]

Footnotes

1 A "secret dossier" of evidence regarding Dreyfus's alleged treason had been compiled in the fall of 1894 by General Mercier and Colonel Sandherr. It was in June 1899 that Dreyfus's 1895 guilty verdict was annulled, and he was released from Devil's Island to return to France. His second court marshall took place in August‒September of 1899. This was covered verbatim ("Der Proceß in Rennes") in the opening pages of the Neue freie Presse from August 6 to the second guilty verdict on September 10, and his subsequent pardon was covered on September 20 and 21. The "geheimes Dossier" was mentioned many times, especially on September 8 and 9. It is thus quite likely that Schenker wrote this brief entry within that time-frame.

2 Several earthquakes were reported in the Neue freie Presse in 1899: June 19 in Linz, July 20 in Rome, and September 18 in Laibach (Ljubljana). Morover, major earthquakes occurred at Yakutat Bay (8.2) in Alaska on September 10, and at Ceram (7.8) in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) on September 30. It is impossible to know whether Schenker's aphorism was prompted by any particular newspaper report.
