Visit to the Sezession. "Carrière." 1 George Bernard Shaw's Don Juan in Hell (Neue Deutsche Rundschau) 2 lifted me suddenly and forcefully out of a mood of dejection. An original, high-spirited, skeptical yet kind, clever play, full of spirit and surprises. © Translation Ian Bent, 2017 |

Footnotes1 This exhibition, of the work of Eugène Carrière (1849‒1906) and other artists, ran from November 4 to December 27, 1906. See program. 2 Don Juan in Hell formed Act III, Scene 2 of Shaw's four-act play Man and Superman (1903). It comprises a philosophical debate between Don Juan (= Jack Tanner), the Devil, (Donna) Anna, the statue (of the Commendatore), and an old woman. As Schenker indicates, he read it in a quarterly German literary journal: "Don Juan in der Hölle von Bernard Shaw. Zwischenspiel aus dem Drama 'Mensch und Übermensch'," in: Die Neue Rundschau, 17th year, vol. 2 (1906), pp. 1335‒73. |
