20. VI. 13

A commentary on the trial of Altmann, who murdered [his] three brothers-in-law: witnesses are brought who are supposed to vouch for the respectability of the brothers-in-law. 1 As if it were not ever the case that one always presents clients or other friends only as respectable, so that one can be all the freer in meanness or coarseness towards an inferior being. What procedural or other human value does the affirmation of respectability have from the party that has obtained it? *Dr. Brünauer asks if he can delay sending his lesson fee until July, as he is taking a trip! — *

On February 20, 1913, two building contractors Alfred and Otto Berger, together with their brother Richard, a bookkeeper, were fatally shot by their own brother-in-law, the unemployed Emil Altmann. Altmann, who was in serious financial straits, had been dismissed the previous year from his brothers-in-law's firm following an argument.
