Footnotes1 The first volume of Romain Rolland's Beethoven: les grandes époques créatrices, subtitled "From the Eroica to the Appassionata" and first published in 1927, mentions only Schenker's facsimile edition of the "Moonlight" Sonata autograph, with the additional reproduction of the known sketch leaves for the sonata. By 1937, in the third volume of the series, Rolland is praising Schenker's Erläuterungsausgaben as "indispensable for scholars and interpreters" and his readings of the late sonatas are replete with references to these volumes. 2 Epiphyllum: a genus of nineteen species plants in the cactus family, native to Central America, which usually grow on other plants for support; also known as "orchid cactus." 3 The last of Schumann's Twelve Four-hand Piano Pieces, Op. 85. There are several arrangements of this piece for cello and piano. |
