1 Probably On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History (1831), transl. Ernst Wicklein as Helden und Heldenverehrung (Jena: Diederichs, 1913). Schenker’s diary for March 26 reads: “Carlyle's essay on men and heroes ultimately transmits neither a positive nor negative message. It seems typical that Carlyle presents his ideas in such a way that one perceives them more as a sequence than a consequence. A kind of intellectual breathing: he thinks the way he breathes; but in the realm of ideas a goal is needed to establish order.”
