Footnotes1 Elias began her study of thoroughbass from C. P. E. Bach’s Versuch in January 1912 and will complete it on June 23, 1913. She has been studying chapter XXV “Appoggiaturas” since March 1 of 1913 (see her lesson notes for March 1, 10, and 17). 2 Thoroughbass comprises Section 5 of the Versuch, chapters II–XXI, and accompaniment Section 6, chapters XXII–XL. Appoggiaturas are the subject of chapter XXV, hence they fall within accompaniment. Schenker appears to be saying that appoggiaturas would have been better introduced before the “main” coverage of thoroughbass, thus before or at the beginning of thoroughbass, presumably because of their affinity to suspensions. 3 This was not a lesson, since Weisse’s lessons were on Fridays, and his name is not double-underlined. Whether he came during Elias’s lesson or not is unclear. The “little waltz” was a composition of Weisse’s own. This sort of information would normally be conveyed via Schenker’s diary; there is no entry there for this day. |
