Footnotes1 Kahn worked on the Brahms Variations and Fugue on a Theme by G. F. Handel, Op. 24, in February and March 1913, and was able to perform the variations complete and from memory by March 22 (cf. her lesson notes). The work is not referred to in her lesson notes for April and May. 2 The only other reference in Kahn’s lesson notes for 1912/13 to a Gavotte or a Suite is that for May 10, 1913 “Dm Gavotte”. In her 1913/14 notes there are only, on October 11, “Bach Dm Gavotte,” and on March 21, 1914 “Gavotte.” Since J. S. Bach’s French Suite in D minor has no gavotte whereas his English Suite in D minor has a pair of them, it is likely that reference here, and on May 10, October 11, and March 21, 1914, is to the English Suite No 6 in D minor, BWV 811. |
