Footnotes1 There is no Op. 25 Etude in E major, only Op. 10, No. 3. There are Etudes in C minor, A minor, and Cě minor in Op. 25, but also in Op. 10 (Nos. 12, 2, and 4), which casts some doubt on those attributions in view of the deletion of “10,”; however, “con fuoco” confirms Op. 25, No.12 for the C minor Etude. 2 Colbert’s lesson for November 20, in which Schenker uses the word Novelle, suggests he is referring to the C minor Etude Op. 10, No. 2 and the contention that the study was composed in reaction to the capture of Warsaw by the Russian army in September 1831 – but Schenker may be referring just to the general arc of the piece itself. However, the reference to 16th-notes in both lesson reports suggests that he is talking about the same Etude in the two lessons. — Colbert has been working on Op. 25, No. 12 since November 13. |
