Footnotes

1 The diary entry appears for the following day: “To Mrs. Deutsch, Emerson read aloud; and I sent her to the newspapers in the coffee house. No sooner did the conversation take the turn – precisely on account of the essay by Emerson – since at all times the giving person cuts a tragic figure; the woman thus reminded of an act of giving would rather cease having a conversation: so often whenever the woman hears about giving, it rolls coldly over her back. Taking is her passion, even if she must also complain that the others do not wish to give!” – The item read out would appear to be “Gifts,” published in Emerson’s second series of essays (1844).

2 Reference to C. P. E. Bach’s two volumes of Kurze und leichte Clavierstücke mit veränderten Reprisen … (1766, 1768). Schenker introduced these pieces also to Weisse and Elias on the same day and Hupka on the previous day.
