Footnotes

1 Schenker’s diary for this day records: “A serious talk with Mrs. Deutsch concerning her trio chums, and a defense made against her position of sacrificing myself and my discipline to her greed. She admits that she need only pay the cellist and is also determined not to abandon the violinist, although he is forever putting obstacles in her way and behaves in all respects with malice and arrogance. I have now explained to her that I shall not tolerate her playing with them under my banner, something that perhaps in the end may have convinced her, so far as greed can actually be reasoned with!”
