Footnotes1 A clear succession of fifths is present in the bass between the upbeat to m. 23 and the downbeat of m. 26, and again in mm. 30–34, in Dę major, and these are indeed reshaped when the material recurs in the coda of the piece, mm. 72–85, particularly from m. 78. If the first of these passages were labeled B1, then the coda would be B2, but Schenker’s labelling is not entirely clear, nor is the meaning of “alterierte Erscheinungen.” (Pairamall’s notes refer to her working on this piece at the lessons for February 14 (“continuation”), 18, 21 (with “analysis”), 25, 28, and March 4, but with no further discussion of the fifths issue.) |
