Footnotes1 On January 27, Breisach received an introduction to “II1” – clearly a reference to Kontrapunkt 1. On March 3 “I 2” appears in his lesson notes. These references to “II 1” and “II 2” (without superscript), etc. are a new and short-lived shorthand for number of voices (II) and species (1, 2). This is used only in the lesson notes for Breisach and Hupka, and only between January and June 1914. 2 This may refer to Schenker’s own edition, Klavierwerke von Philipp Emanuel Bach, neue kritische Ausgabe, 2 vols (Vienna: UE, [1903]). |
