Footnotes

1 Schenker’s diary for this day records: “Mrs. Deutsch shows me a postcard from her sister, in which I am asked to give lessons to the latter, or Miss Kahn in my place. The fact that the two sisters spent the Easter holidays together on the Semmering shows the postcard conspicuously to be a [consciously planned] request. When one considers that Mrs. Deutsch also attached to the proposal the possibility of my giving her sister lessons in her place for the duration of her trip, then the suspicion arises that an agreement was made between the two sisters in order that the cost of the lessons could be shared.”
