Footnotes ¹ i.e. two-voice counterpoint, 4th and 5th species respectively. ² “Verkoppelung”: probably no relation to the “Koppelung” of Schenker’s later theory. The “Weg zu A3” perhaps indicates mm. 188 to 212, in which Chopin reintroduces fragments of A1 interlinked with elements from the long middle section.
