¹ Schenker’s diary for this day records: “Miss Kahn given instruction for the letter to Mrs. Deutsch's sister; for it is necessary to keep in check a woman who for decades rebelled against the truth, only to finally take refuge in the truth as the redeemer. … To conceal her unspeakable greed, Mrs. Deutsch dares to appeal to my authority in my presence, and to say that she has learned from me to be so parsimonious in distributing her means in making subventions. Evidently, she harbors the delusion that until that moment she had proved herself to be a humane, kindhearted woman.”

² A Mrs. Fried sought the address of Kahn in May 1918 with a view to lessons for her daughter, who (if the same person) came to Schenker for lessons in 1919/20 and 1920/21. Whether these later events relate to this current reference is unclear. No earlier reference to the last name “Fried” has come to light in Schenker’s writings.
