Footnotes1 Schenker’s diary for this day records: “Miss Elias tells me that it is impossible for her to sit in the first few rows of a concert hall, as she is unable to suppress her contempt for the class of people [who sit there]. For this reason she prefers to sit in the balcony. I wonder, however, whether nature has played her a trick; whether it is not rather more the case that the girl in question takes a seat in the balcony only because she regularly, and often, attends concerts in the company of another schoolgirl and, perhaps precisely on account of the latter, has the opportunity of saving money?” 2 Herman Roth, ed., 25 Geistliche Lieder (aus dem Schemellischen Gesangbuch) für eine Singstimme und basso continuo (Leipzig: C. F. Peters, [n.d.]), a copy of which, with annotations in Schenker's hand, is preserved at OJ 25/1. No. 15 "Liebster Herr Jesu! wo bleibest du so lange?" (BWV 484). |
