Footnotes1 Schenker's diary for November 4 records: "Mrs. Pairamall for her first lesson, at which I now go over that which had remained unsaid as a result of my stubborn refusal to receive her. After more than two hours the status quo was reached, palliated only by cheap phrases; that is, Mrs. P. again imagines that I think her as respectable as I had previously, in the belief of which I must therefore leave her – only because she would only be cured of it if I were permitted to say openly to her face that she is the opposite of that. But so long as this is impossible – and who would regard it as being at all possible – she will retain the vanity to believe that she could be seen as she is. However, these are all trivialities; the main thing remains the fulfillment of obligation on my part, and on hers." |
