African-American dancer, actress, and singer, nicknamed the "bronze Venus," the "black pearl," and the "Creole godess." She became a French citizen in 1937. She also starred in three films.

Baker first appeared as a dancer in Paris at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées on October 2, 1925, when she became an immediate success.
