Career Summary

Oscar Bie studied art history in Breslau, Leipzig, and Berlin, receiving his doctorate in 1886. In 1890, he took up a lectureship in art history at the Technical Highschool in Berlin, and published in the visual arts whilst establishing himself also as a writer on music and becoming a music critic for the Berliner Börsencourier and editor of Die freie Bühne. In 1921 he became a lecturer at the Berlin Highschool for Music.

He published books on a wide variety of musical subjects ‒ genres such as dance music, ballet, Lied, and opera, and the composers Schubert, Strauss, and Wagner.
