Footnotes

1 The address was intially typed as "Wien III., / Keilgasse 8"; this was whited out and overtyped on the top copy, but was separately deleted and the new address inserted on the carbon copy. This letter exists in two sources: OC 52/851, the dispatched letter with printed letterhead and signatures, and WSLB 413, the carbon copy lacking letterhead and signatures but initialed.

2 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/2, p. 3356, July 26, 1929: "Von der U.-E. (Br.): Beilage von Edmund Schmidt über meine Beethoven-Ausgabe." ("From UE (letter): inclosure by Edmund Schmidt regarding my Beethoven edition.").

3 Not preserved adjacent to this letter; but two extracts from a subsequent letter by Schmid, typed out by UE staff on to a separate sheet, are enclosed with OC 52/853 (August 5, 1929) as document OC 52/854-855, which were an "amplification" of his earlier remarks.
