OJ 10/18, [4] - Handwritten letter from Elias to Schenker, dated September 23, 1929
© Transcription Michaela Searfoorce, 2006, 2019 |
Heartfelt thanks for your friendly missive. 2 I will appear at your place Tuesday October 1 punctually at 12 o'clock, and as always look forward to the recommencement of my studies. 3 I am very curious about Oppel's Waltzes, 4 which gave you and your dear wife so much joy. {verso} I did not get back from Wels 5 until the 14th, and have been staying at home since then to finish up various things that were not done before my departure. 6 But now I hope to be able to dedicate myself once again to music, undisturbed as much as possible, and between now and October 1, as far as can be, to bring to a close the voice-leading sketch of the fugue by Handel 8 begun in Vent 7 © Translation Michaela Searfoorce, 2006, 2019 |

Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/2, p. 3382, September 25,1929: "Von Frl. Elias u. Kahn (Br.): Bestätigungen." ("From Miss Elias and Miss Kahn (letter[s?]): confirmation."). 2 The item is not known to have survived, but Schenker's diary for September 21 records: "An Frl. Elias (K.): erwarte sie am 1. X." ("To Miss Elias (postcard): I expect her on October 1."). 3 Elias's previous lesson had been on June 13, 1929, at the end of Schenker’s season. Her first lesson of the 1929/1930 season was on October 1, with regular lessons each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, through to June 26, 1930. 4 The two sets of waltzes by Reinhard Oppel are: (1) Walzer fuer Klavier. Frau J. Schenker zur Erinnerung an den Sommer 1929 in Galtuer, and (2) 3 Walzer vom Sommer 1931 in Galtuer. Frau J. Schenker in immer gleicher Verehrung gewidmet von Reinhard Oppel. One set of these has been recorded by Heejung Kang on Toccata Classics, Reinhard Oppel: Piano Music, vol. I TOCC0003 (2011). 5 Wels: on the Traun River in the foothills of the Eastern Alps, approximately equidistant between Munich and Vienna. It has Roman remains and an imperial castle, and holds an annual fair, the Welser Messe. 6 Elias wrote continuously, but a paragraph-sign has been drawn before "Nun." 7 Vent: ski village in the foothills of the Wildspitze mountain, near to Obergurgl and Sölden, in the Ötztal region. 8 No item answering this description and identified with Elias appears to survive in the Oster or Oswald Jonas Memorial collections. Her lessonbook notes include: Oct 3: "Händel Suite, Bild der Einleitung korrigirt."— Oct 17: "Bild der Händel-Fuge begonnen." —Oct 31: "Beginn der Korrektur des Bildes vom Mittelteil der Fuge." — Nov 21: "Korrektur der 1. Schicht in den Fugenbildern abgeschlossen." — Dec 5: "Das Hintergrundbild der Fuge verfaßt." (Oct 3: "Handel suite, graph of the introduction corrected." — Oct 17: "Graph of the Handel fugue begun." — Oct 31: "Begining of correction to the graph of the middle section of the fugue." — Nov 21: "Correction of the first layer in the fugue graphs completed." — Dec 5: "The background graph of the fugue drawn."). |
