Footnotes1 Brahms's birthdate was May 7, 1833: the editorially suggested date proposes that Elias wrote this on or around the centenary of that date. (Counter to that, the other calling cards of this type all date from after Heinrich's death; however the printing on this card is in a different typeface from the other three.) Corroboration of the suggested date may come from Schenker's diary at OJ 4/6, p. 3836, May 24, 1933: "Frl. Elias schenkt mir das Doppelkonzert von Brahms." ("Miss Elias makes a present to me of the Double Concerto by Brahms."). The Double Concerto featured on the centenary concert program of May 19, 1933, organized by the German Brahms Society and given by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler. |
