Dear Sir,

A brief overview ‒ without Realism 1 ‒ of the Sonzogno market 2 would be very welcome. I found the Smetana 3 splendid. Many thanks! Send greetings for me to Gelber, 4 who didn't come and isn't writing.

With best wishes, in wild haste,

Footnotes

1 That is, without a discussion of Realism.

2 This would eventually become "Der Sonzogno-Markt in Wien," which appeared in Die Zukunft 4 (August 5, 1893), 282‒83. In that article, Schenker critiques the consequences of the Viennese market for Italian operas largely subvented by the Italian publishing house Sonzogno: "We deserve, quite candidly, everything unpleasant that Sonzogno and Ricordi may yet visit on us in the future, since we are paying the price for abandoning the great prophets of our own art." ("[W]ir verdienen wohl redlich alles Uebel, das Sonzogno und Ricordi in Zukunft uns noch bescheren mögen, da wir den Abfall von den großen Propheten unserer eigenen Kunst büßen."). The article is reprinted in Hellmut Federhofer, Heinrich Schenker als Essayist und Kritiker (Hildesheim: Georg Olms Verlag, 1990), 55.

3 This article, "Friedrich Smetana," was published in Die Zukunft 3 (July 1, 1893), 37‒40. It is reprinted in Hellmut Federhofer, Heinrich Schenker als Essayist und Kritiker (Hildesheim: Georg Olms Verlag, 1990), 48‒53.

4 Probably the scholar of German language and literature, Adolph Gelber (1856‒1923).
