1 Writing of this postcard is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/6, p. 3794, November 24, 1932: "An v.H. (K.): wie steht das Befinden?"! ("To Hoboken (postcard): what is his state of health?").

2 Part III of Der freie Satz is entitled "Vordergund" ("Foreground"). It covers pp. 93‒219 (Eng. transl., pp. 53‒145), and is subdivided into five sections, each subdivided further into chapters.

3 According to the Neue freie Presse for Sunday November 20, p.16, this off-series concert by the Vienna Philharmonic under Wilhelm Furtwängler took place on that day at 11.30 a.m. in the large hall of the Musikverein Building, the all-Beethoven program being the "Egmont" Overture, the Sixth Symphony and the Seventh Symphony. Heinrich and Jeanette Schenker attended the concert, Heinrich recorded the event in his diary: "At 11.30, concert: "Egmont" Overture, Sixth Symphony. Furtwängler learned much on Wednesday ‒ we leave before the Seventh." The allusion is to Furtwängler's visit to Schenker on November 16, which lasted four-and-a-half hours.
