Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor! 1

Dear Director, 1

May I in addition ask you kindly to send me the edition[s] 1) Breitkopf & Härtel and 2) Steingräber of the Chromatic Fantasy [ & Fugue ], with which I am not acquainted. (I own the edition[s] of the Bach Gesellschaft and Peters also Bülow, Busoni myself.) I will immediately set to work on my beautiful new assignment, 2 and therefore ask you to send the above-mentioned editions quickly, and also to take this opportunity ‒ as a formality ‒ of confirming our forthcoming meeting. After work has been completed, there will still be much to discuss about the printing, etc., whether, e.g., the text is to be placed underneath, as in Busoni, or perhaps in some other way, etc.?

With kind regards,
Your devoted

Footnotes

1 Writing of this letter is not recorded in Schenker's diary. This letter exhibits the state of euphoria that still prevailed from Schenker's April 1 meeting with Hertzka.

2 Schenker's use of "schön" is noteworthy here, since he previously spoke of the Well-tempered Clavier task as "beautiful" before changing the draft to "noble" ("würdig") in WSLB 31, December 21, 1908.
