Pr.)“ Blumenthal erzählt vom bevorstehenden Niedergang des Theaters; 1 konstatiert den Misbrauch der wirtschaftlichen Freiheit, unter dem Titel: 2 der Kunst ihre Freiheit feiges Anrufen der Gesetzgebung, die man kurz zuvor als das bornierte Hinderniß aller Kunstentwicklung nicht ohne Arroganz hingestellt hat.

Misverständ[n]is von citierten Versen Grillparzers, 3 der, eben ein wahrer Dichter, den Kern der schwierigen Situation sofort mit Divination erfaßt hat.

( Neue freie Presse ) Blumenthal predicts the imminent decline of the theater; 1 he denounces the misuse of economic freedom, under the rubric: 2 the freedom of art to invoke in cowardly fashion law-giving that only recently was held up to be the ignorant restricting of all artistic development.

Misunderstanding of the quoted lines by Grillparzer, 3 who, true poet as he is, has immediately grasped the nub of the difficult situation with uncanny foresight.

1 Oskar Blumenthal, "Feuilleton: Berliner Theaternot," Neue freie Presse December 7, 1909, pp. 1‒3, in which the author complains that the law of free competition in Berlin has encouraged speculative property owners and architects to build a rash of new theaters, many duplicating others in function, resulting in empty seats, putting directors under financial strain, and making life hard for actors.

2 What follows is not a quotation from the feuilleton, but a loose summary of its final paragraph. By "Gesetzgebung" Blumenthal means the passing of laws governing economic behavior.

3 On p. 3, to finish the feuilleton, Blumenthal quotes four lines of poetry by Grillparzer: "Trotz Not und Pein eurer Bühnenberater / Fehlen drei Dinge dem deutschen Theater. / Danach seht euch vor allem um ‒ / Darsteller, Dichter und Publikum" ("Despite the need and pain of your theater advisers / Three things are missing from the German theater. / Search above all for ‒ / Actors, playwrights and the public.")
