Ausflug nach Mauerbach; nach längerer Zeit den Ort wiedergesehen u. daran eine größere Freude gehabt. Es scheint, daß nur Ueberfülle an Menschen es gewesen, die mir früher den Genuß verleidet hat. Sich selbst u. nur wenigen Ausflüglern überlassen wirkt der Ort überaus freundlich. Welch’ Epos bedeutet die große Linde vor der Kirche, die tief in Jahrhunderte hinabreicht. Statt ihr die Zunge zu lösen, hat man sie umgittert u.( wie man ein altes Buch in die Bibliothek gelegt, nachdem man einen neuen Einband machen ließ ). – Die Schule ¹ ist ein freundliches Produkt der neueren Richtung. Es ist durchaus willkommen zu heißen, wenn Kindern des Volkes mindestens in Instituten der Gemeinde, bezw. des Staates schöne Räume zu genußvollem Aufenthalte geboten werden. Zum guten Teil beruht die Wirkung auch der Kirche ² darauf, daß sie den armen, um’s tägliche Brod [sic] schwer ringenden Menschen den Eintritt in einen Raum gestattet, der von Gold u. Silber u. allerhand Pracht strotzt. In solchem Genuß findet dann ein wohltuender Ausgleich zwischen Arm u. Reich statt u. wie wenig kostet er der Kirche!

Am entzückendsten ist wohl das Schlößchen ³ eines vermutlich polnischen Grafen, dessen Wirtschaftsbesitz jenseits der das Städtchen Dörfchen durchquerenden Straße liegt, so daß man sagen kann: die Dorfstraße durchquere den gräfl. Besitz. Besonders eindringlich wirkt die Situation, wenn das Parktor, sowie das Tor zu den Wirtschaftsgebäuden, die einander gegenüber stehen, geöffnet sind. Was mag wohl einen polnischen Grafen in diese Gegend geführt haben?

Excursion to Mauerbach; the place seen for the first time in a long time, and from it a greater pleasure gained. It seems that it was only the profusion of people that had earlier spoiled my enjoyment. Left to ourselves and only a few other tourists, the place creates a thoroughly agreeable effect. What an epic is signified by the great lime tree in front of the church, which reaches back centuries. Instead of its tongue being released, it has been fenced off, much as one returns an old book to the library after giving it a new cover. – The school ¹ is a happy product of the more recent trend. It must surely be a good thing that attractive rooms, at least in institutes of the village (or the state), are made available to children from the local community for pleasant use. To a considerable extent, the church ² also plays its role in this, in that it allows the poor people, who have difficulty struggling to earn their daily bread, to enter into a space bristling with gold and silver and all manner of opulence. In such an indulgence, one finds a beneficent balance between poor and rich, and how little this costs the church!

The most charming of all is surely the little castle ³ that presumably belongs to a Polish count, whose commercial assets lie on the other side of the street that runs through the village, so that one could say that the town's main street divides the count's property. A powerful sensation is made when the park gate and the gate to the commercial buildings, which stand opposite one another, are open. What could have led a Polish count to this region?
