— Bei Nuphar Seife für Kr. 7 (gegen Kr. 5.50 früher!) eingekauft. — Heftiges Schneegestöber bei 5½° gegen abend. — Die Hausbesorgerin berichtet mir, daß mich inzwischen ein Mann mit Brief u. Tasche gesucht habe u. außerdem „noch ein anderer Mann“, – u. daß sie beiden Auskunft über meinen [recte meine] Aufenthalts stunden in der Wohnung sorglich gegeben habe. —

Karte von Einschenk vorgefunden; teile mit, daß er Mozio soeben gesprochen, mich leider am Nachmittag vergebens gesucht habe u. daher das Resultat lieber mündlich morgen zwischen 10–11^h mitteilen wolle. — Der Durchschnittsmensch – das verkörperte Selbstgefühl! Schade, daß die Forderung der jüdischen Religion (oder des Kultus?), Gottes Segen auf die Dinge herabzuflehen, die man täglich in die Hand nimmt (Broche ¹ ), mit an- {655} schließendem Dank, dem Durchschnittsmenschen nicht auch sonst schon durch eine erste Erziehung in der Schule eingeimpft wird, damit er – u. sei es auch mit einer Formeln – den Dank an Gott für die Schaffung aller Köstlichkeiten des Tags über mehrmals abstatte. Denn in welcher Lage immer der Durchschnittsmensch sich befindet, immer nur beginnt u. schließt er mit sich selbst, u. nichts vermag seinen Sinn aus dieser Selbstanbetung herauszureißen u. Platz für einen an irgend eine andere Stelle abzustattenden Dank einzuräumen zu erzwingen. Wenn er z. B. das Bahncoupé besteigt, so freut er sich vor allem dessen, daß er reist u. reisen kann, aber nicht einen Augenblick lang fällt es ihm ein[,] jener Erfinder-Wohltäter zu gedenken, die ihm das Vergnügen überhaupt erst möglich gemacht haben. – Er heiratet u. tut es vor allem mit höchstem Grad von Selbstgefühl, aber niemals würde ihm beifallen jener zu gedenken, die ihn in diese bester beste aller Formen zwangen usf. Und gerade diese immer nur sich selbst fühlenden Durchschnittsmenschen hält die Welt für ihre Stützen –, darnach ist sie wohl aber auch! — Ich halte es für keine Utopie, die Welt zum Genie auch ohne Gewaltanwendung zu erzielen. Denn schließlich kristallisiert sich im Laufe der Zeiten zu jeder Zeit u. überall das Gefühl der Allgemeinheit für ein etwaiges Genie. Und so bliebe denn nurmehr übrig, die Welt zu zwingen, dem Genie den schuldigen Dank schon bei Lebzeiten so abzustatten, wie es ihn leider nur in Worten von der Nachwelt empfängt.

— At Nuphar's, soap purchased for 7 Kronen (compared to 5.50 before!). — Towards evening, heavy snow flurries in 5½° temperature. — The caretaker reports to me that, in the meantime, a man with a letter and a case looked for me, and in addition "yet another man," and that they both provided accurate information about the hours I spent in the apartment. —

— In the evening, I find a postcard by pneumatic mail from Einschenk ; he tells me that he has just spoken with Mozio ; unfortunately he looked in vain for me in the afternoon, and therefore would prefer to tell me the result face to face tomorrow, between 10 and 11 o'clock. — The mediocre person – the embodiment of self-awareness! A pity that demands of the Jewish religion (or cult?), to offer God's blessing to things that one receives daily (with a broche ¹ ), and subsequently thanks, {655} is something that is not inculcated into the mediocre person, not even during his earliest education at school, in order that – even if it takes the form of established wording – he would offer his thanks to God for the creation of all the treasures of the day. For no matter in which position the mediocre person finds himself, he always begins and ends with himself, and nothing can tear his mind from this self-adoration and compel him to make space to offer thanks elsewhere. When, for example, he boards a train carriage, he is delighted above all that he is travelling, that he is able to travel; but it doesn't occur to him, even for a moment, to think of the benevolent inventor who granted him this pleasure in the first place. He gets married, and does so above all with the highest degree of self-awareness; but it would never occur to him to commemorate the one who pressed him into the best of all forms, etc. And these very mediocre people, who care only about themselves, treat the world as their crutches – and that is what it surely will be thereafter! — I regard it as no utopia, to strive to make the world a genius even without the application of force. For ultimately, in the course of time at all time and elsewhere, the feeling of generality crystallizes itself into some sort of genius. And so all that now remains to be done is to persuade the world to confer upon geniuses that gratitude they deserve even during their lifetimes, as they receive it from posterity, unfortunately, only in words.
