Footnotes

1 Schenker’s diary for October 28 records: “Mrs. Stirling – to whom I explained a few days ago that holidays belong to the teacher, and indeed not as a gift but as protection against an extra increase of gifts on his part – asks me angrily, in an almost choked voice, what happened to the eighth lesson in November. The record of the number of lessons, once the holidays are discounted, has in fact resulted in an advantage of four hours in the pupil's favor; and then the money-grabbing woman asks in her ninth lesson, i.e. an unpaid hour, about the eighth lesson of November. She calms down only when I likewise account for the eighth. The idea that 9 plus 7 make 16 is something that the woman could not understand, though she is able to carry out the most wide-ranging stock-market transactions; when it comes to a few pennies, this barbarian remains so hostile to culture and art.”
