Footnotes1 Schenker’s diary for this day records: “From Frankfurt, the second autograph manuscript [containing the Recitativo, Arioso dolente, and last movement] of Op. 110 arrives. […] Even a first glance at the first page showed me clearly that the autograph score is genuine: it was the passage of recitative that immediately sprang to my eyes! I take it that this autograph was prepared after the completion of the first one, which is already in my possession, and indeed at the moment at which Beethoven, as the pencil sketch shows, believed to have found an improvement of the ominous fugue. The final improvements, at any rate, followed still later.” — Schenker had already shown the Op. 110 sketches, which had arrived on November 2, to Weisse on November 3. |
