Footnotes

1 Schenker’s diary for the day records: “Mrs. Deutsch does not abandon her egoism – to take, to steal, to misuse as much as possible – and time and again she thinks up new paths by which she can arrive at what she calls blessedness, and what I call the blessedness of taking. She even sacrifices the fruits of her tuition, only so that she can come into contact with people who might possibly be able to give her access to further circles. The poor, rich woman does not want to rest on her knowledge, nor on her conscience, nor on her feeling of her own value; she wants to be rid of her own virtues and would rather be among people, even if they will destroy her knowledge and conscience and her self-esteem. Admittedly, she complains about this destruction, but she does not tire of running after these acts of destruction!”
