Footnotes1 “to knock out”: i.e. to learn very quickly. Schenker’s diary for this day records: “A pupil from Brno, who wishes to gain as many advantages from little, or nothing, believes – just in passing – that she can knock out a trio by Haydn for public performance, and already manifests her shrewdness by not admitting to her plan. So may her conscience tell her plainly that to begin in this way is not sound, or more of this sort. And yet she is unable to tame her craving for advantages. I have thwarted her plan as far as possible.” — Cf. Kaff’s lessons for January 7 and 14. |
