Footnotes1 Easter Sunday 1914 fell on April 12. The St. Matthew Passion was performed on Tuesday April 7 in the Musikvereinssaal in the third non-subscription concert of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde, under the direction of Franz Schalk with the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra, the Singverein of the Gesellschaft, and the boy choristers of the Catholic youth society Maria Hilf. One of the soloists was Johannes Messchaert. Schenker’s diary reports his attendance of the dress rehearsal on April 6. |
