Bußler studied music theory with Siegfried Dehn, taught at the Ganz School of Music in Berlin from 1865, and from 1874 at the Stern Conservatory. He was also active as a conductor and from 1883 as music critic for the Nationalzeitung.
His published works, which were in wide use, and were notable at the time for their inclusion of music examples from the 18th- and 19th-century repertories, include:
