Johann Krill attended secondary school (Gymnasium) in Eger, and then studied languages at the universities of Vienna and Paris, becoming a secondary school teacher. He entered Max Hesses Verlag as joint proprietor with Ella Pancera (Max Hesse having died in 1907) in 1911. Despite having no musical training, he consolidated music at the centre of the publishing house's work. In 1927 he became the sole proprietor of the firm, and took over the Deutsche Verlagsanstalt (Stuttgart) in 1929. He remained in control of the firm until his death in 1946, after which his wife, Regina Krill, took it over.
