Makart is known nowadays chiefly for his influence on Gustav Klimt and other Austrian artists, but in his own era was considered an important artist in his own right and a celebrity figure in the high culture of Vienna. He is adjudged to be the model painter of the Ringstraße era, 1860s to 1890s.
