German music lexicographer, author, and editor. Known principally for his Encyclopädie der gesammten musikalischen Wissenschaften oder Universal-Lexikon der Tonkunst (Encyclopedia of All the Musical Sciences, or Universal Lexikon of Music), 6 vols (Stuttgart: F. H. Köhler, 1835-38, suppl. 1842, 2/1840-42), Schilling also wrote books on music aesthetics, harmony, modern music, piano performance, and other topics. He also edited the fourth and fifth (of which Schenker had a copy in his personal library) editions of C. P. E. Bach's Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen.
