[...] 1 ⇧ einen Stelle „noch will ich nicht das letzte Wort gesprochen haben“ 2 an der anderen, u. schließlich verstand ich unter Nichtvergebung 3 des Stipendiums an der gleich darauffolgenden Stelle nur die fallsweise, sowie sie schon auch die Erblasserin in Uebereinstimmung mit meinen Anschauungen ins Auge gefasst hat. Ich behalte mir somit nach meinen Erfahrungen die weiteren Entschlüsse vor. Für all Ihre übrigen Mitteilungen besten Dank.

[...] 1 ⇧ the one passage “This is not, however, my last word on the subject.” 2 to the other, and I at last understood by the non-awarding 3 of the stipend at the passage immediately thereafter, but only on an ad hoc basis, as well as it has envisaged also the deceased [to be] in agreement with my outlook. In view of my experiences, I accordingly reserve my further decisions. Many thanks for all your other communications.

1 Because of the fragmentary nature of the document, the meaning of its content is not entirely clear. We can only hope that the earlier pages will come to light eventually.

2 Clause used by Schenker in the seventh paragraph of his letter to Friedmann OC 1B/19–20, March 12, 1917.

3 The normal meaning of “Nichtvergebung” is “non-forgiveness.” Reference is to the “stipends for impecunious skilled composers and composition pupils” instituted by Sofie Deutsch, which were to be placed entirely at Schenker’s discretion, about which Schenker expressed misgivings in his previous letter to Friedmann.
