Wir können für Brahms-Autographen leider keine Liebhaber-Preise zahlen. Wenn aber der Besitzer von op. 1 mit 600 Reichsmark dafür zufrieden ist, will ich es für die Bibliothek ankaufen, vorausgesetzt, daß es vollständig und wirklich von Brahms selbst geschrieben ist. Die beiden andern Stücke kämen für uns nicht in Frage. 2

Unfortunately we cannot pay collector's prices for Brahms autographs. But if the owner of Op. 1 is content with 600 Reichsmarks for it, I will purchase it for the Library, provided that it is complete and genuinely in Brahms's own hand. The other two pieces would be out of the question for us. 2

("From Altmann (postcard): offers 600 Marks for [Brahms] Op. 1."). Schenker's writing to Altmann is recorded at p. 2877, October 10, 1925: "An Altmann (Br.): . . . In der Nachschrift frage ich wegen der Brahms-Handschriften an." ("To Altmann (letter): . . . In the postscript I ask him about the Brahms manuscripts.").
