Footnotes1 Receipt of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 2/6, p. 601, January 6, 1917: "Parte Professor Ernst Rudorff." ("Death announcement of Professor Ernst Rudorff."). ("Letter of condolence to the widow Rudorff: The news of the passing of your highly revered husband has affected even me with the deepest personal sorrow. His endorsement, his noble encouragement were propitious moments for me in the battle. Above all the tumult of the day, his artistic mentality, truly dedicated only to the highest and the best, which he represented in exemplary fashion, will ultimately triumph."). Between the two entries, Schenker went to the sanatorium and discovered that his patroness, Mrs. Sofie Deutsch, had died overnight, thus learning of two deaths on the same day. 2 Ernst Rudorff was born on January 18, 1840. |
