1 Receipt of this letter is not recorded in Schenker's diary. The document number adopted here is that assigned in Charlotte E. Erwin and Bryan R. Simms, "Schoenberg's Correspondence with Heinrich Schenker," Journal of the Arnold Schoenberg Institute v (1981), 23–43. The document from which this edition was made is a photocopy; the whereabouts of the original is not known. An annotation at the foot of the photocopy in another hand (that of Oswald Jonas?) reads "10. 11. 1903", and it is on the basis of this that the editorial dating is made.

2 The première of Schenker's Syrische Tänze in Schoenberg's orchestral transcription took place on November 5, 1903 in the Beethovensaal in Berlin as the first of a series of Orchester-Abende with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under Ferruccio Busoni. A copy of the printed program for this concert is preserved in OJ 35/5. Schenker records in his diary at OJ 1/3, p. 11, November 4, 1903: "nach Berlin mit Floriz bei Brodes[?]. Zu schnelle Tempi im Vortrage Busonis. Schlimme „Kritiken“. Influenza .." ("To Berlin with Floriz, at Brodes's[?] place. Tempi too fast in Busoni's performance. Bad "reviews". Influenza .."). At OJ 1/3, p. 11, November 18, 1903, is recorded: "Auch Prag bestellt die „Syr. T.“ ("Prague, too, books the Syrian Dances.").
