Lieber Meister! 1

Dear Master, 1

Did you not receive my last letter card? How are you and how is the already much longed for II/2? Despite everything I acknowledge my affiliation to art through recent keen study of the first half-volume, which I am enjoying even more ‒ if possible ‒ than before! I am quite well, but I sigh along with Wotan: the End! 2

All the best and most heartfelt greetings to your dear lady

Footnotes

1 Receipt of the letter is recorded in Schenker's diary, OJ 2/6, p. 588, February 6, 1917: "Von Weisse (Br.): fragt, ob ich den früheren erhalten habe (er scheint aber meine Antwort nicht bekommen zu haben); liest II/1 u. erwartet II/2." ("From Weisse (letter): he asks whether I have received his previous missive (but he appears not to have received my reply); is reading II/1 and awaiting II/2."). — Schenker's reply is recorded in his diary at p. 577, January 27, 1917: "An Weisse (Fldpostk.): teile ihm das Ableben der Frau D. u. vom Stipendium mit." ("To Weisse (field postcard): inform him of Mrs. Deutsch's death, and of the stipendium.").

2 A reference to Act II, Scene 2 of Die Walküre, where the despondent Wotan confides to Brünnhilde that his hands are tied by agreements and all that he can do is await the end of the gods’ dominion.
