Footnotes1 Weggis is a resort on Lake Lucerne, at the foot of Mount Rigi. 2 Receipt of this picture postcard is recorded in Schenker’s diary for April 26, 1934: “Von Wolf (Ansichtsk. aus Luzern): freut sich auf die Stunde („sehr geehrter Herr Professor – Ihr ergebener![“]).” (“From Wolf (picture postcard from Lucerne): he looks forward to his lesson ("Dear Professor – Your devoted"!). ”). (Why Schenker singles out the perfectly normal salutation and valediction is unclear; perhaps he expected “verehrter … sehr ergebener”?) 3 April 24 was a Tuesday; the card was perhaps written on the 23rd. The coming Thursday was April 26, in which case Schenker received it on the day of the lesson. 4 Schenker's diary for April 19, 1934 records: “Wolf fährt nach Luzern, wo seine Eltern silberne Hochzeit feiern ….” (“Wolf is going to Lucerne, where his parents are celebrating their silver wedding anniversary ….”). This was presumably conveyed in conversation. Schenker must have written (document not known to survive) sending best wishes for the Wolf parents’ silver wedding anniversary. |
