Danke für deinen l. Bf von gestern! Da dir die 50-Jahr-feier eine Rührung u. Freude sichtlich bereitet hat, sende ich dir die Briefe u. Erinnerungen zurück, die du mir vor Wochen hierher geschickt hast. 2 Im nächsten Jahr ist dann meine 50-Jahr Feier an der Reihe. Werde ich noch {2} leben? in Frieden? Meine Gesundheit läßt, wenn ich mich nicht täusche, nichts zu wünschen übrig, Gott sei Dank. Auch mein th. LieLiechen befindet sich sehr wohl, gestern hat sie Haselnüsse gefunden, die sie seit Kindertagen nicht mehr gesehen hat. Du aber wirst du dich wohl das großen oberhalb des Teiches in Podhajce gelegene Haselnußwald erinnern, wo wir unter Führung der Rosma- {3} rins uns die Taschen gefüllt haben? Noch eine Erfreulichkeit: ich habe Aussicht auf 2 neue Schüler aus Deutschland, wie sich denken läßt, vertriebene Juden! [cued from upper margin upside down:] Natürlich zu sehr herabgesetzten Preisen, aber immerhin neu junge Menschen.[end cue] Das heitert mir der Blut auf. Hier ist es sehr, sehr heiß! Thanks for your first letter from yesterday! Since the semicentennial celebration [of high-school graduation] was clearly emotional and joyful for you, I am sending back to you the letters and remembrances that you sent to me a few weeks ago. 2 Next year, my semicentennial celebration comes up. Will I still be {2} living? In peace? If I am not deceiving myself, my health leaves nothing to desire, thank God. My precious LieLiechen is also quite well. Yesterday she found hazelnuts, which she hadn’t seen since childhood. You will surely remember the large hazelnut forest located upstream from the pond in Podhajce where, guided by Rosemary, {3} we filled our pockets? Yet another bit of joy: I have the prospect of two new students from Germany, displaced Jews as one might think! [cued from upper margin upside down:] Prices too deeply discounted, naturally, but still new, young people.[end cue] That cheers me up. It is very, very hot here! More another time. Footnotes1 The present letter was written from Schloss Reigersberg, where Heinrich and Jeanette spent the summer of 1933. As it acknowledges receipt of a letter from Wilhelm received the previous day and mentions both the 50th anniversary high school celebrations and the return of the letters “sent weeks ago,” it most likely dates from July 26, 1933, even though the writing of a letter to Wilhelm is not recorded in the diary for that day. 2 Receipt of a letter from Wilhelm containing “letters from colleagues” is recorded in Schenker’s diary for June 28, 1933: “Von Wilhelm (Br.): schickt Briefe der Kollegen,” who were probably friends of Wilhelm whom he met at the 50th anniversary of his graduation from high school in Lemberg (see diary entry of June 3, 1933). — Wilhelm’s next letter dates from July 25, four weeks after June 28. |
