Footnotes

1 Writing of this letter is recorded in Schenker's diary at OJ 4/3, p. 3398‒3399, October 24, 1929: "An v. [...] Nach dem Abendessen erscheint das Ehepaar v. Hoboken in sehr gereizter Stimmung; v. H.). Frau v. H. ist ganz Feuer u. Flamme für den Schmutz. Den letzten Punkt des Briefes, der v. H. Schmähung der Deutschen vorwirft, „vergißt“ v. H. zur Sprache zu bringen!" ("To Hoboken (express letter): I enclose Vrieslander's letter. [...] After dinner, the Hoboken couple appear, in a highly agitated mood. Hoboken reads out Vrieslander's letter, point by point, and sounds me out! He denies everything that he had previously and even yesterday admitted; he would like to deduct the honorarium from the half-yearly rent, thus simply not to pay!, just to punish Vrieslander for his joy in complaining. I verily had to point out expressly that this joy is a conditional one – now Hoboken suddenly declares that he will pay Vrieslander after all, in accordance with my wish, [but] at the rate that Haas proposed, i.e. at the lowest rate – the rate at which he will also pay Haas. (That Haas had demanded the highest rate is suppressed by Hoboken.) Mrs. Hoboken is entirely in favor of this dirty dealing. The last point in the letter, which accuses Hoboken of contempt for the Germans, Hoboken "forgets" to read out!").
