1 On internal evidence this was written on a Sunday, which was February 3.

2 The first of three subscription “piano evenings” entitled “The Masterworks of the Piano Repertory in its Historical Unfolding,” taking place on February 4 (Couperin to mid-period Beethoven), 11 (late-period Beethoven to Schumann), and 18 (Chopin to Taussig), in the Bösendorfer Recital Hall.

3 Schenker attended, for his diary for February 4 records: “D'Albert I Kzt. Unkünstlerisch, nachlässig, sich selbst gegenüber geradezu unverantwortlich, ‒ auch frevel, wenn sofern mala fides angenommen werden müßte. Nur Scarlatti Pastorale dm/em machte eine Ausnahme. Sein gewöhnliches tausendmal abgespültes Program neuerdings trügerischerweise als „historisches“ dosiert u. dem Publ. verabreicht!” (“D'Albert Concert I: lacking artistry, sloppy, downright irresponsible toward himself – even iniquitous if insofar as it had to be taken in bad faith. Only the Scarlatti Pastorale in D minor/E minor was an exception. His usual program trotted out a thousand times and now deceitfully dished up as "historical" and administered to the public!”).
Schenker also attended the third concert, recording in his diary for February 18 merely: “d'Alb. III, ähnlich schlecht, wie am I Abend.” (“d'Albert [concert] III, just as bad as on the first evening.”).
