I was at the hotel at 9.30, but you had left, your wife anything but. 2 I then entered the museum, and sauntered around the elegant rooms against a background of pictures. {2} I waited until 11 o’clock, but found no one. In the end, were you prevented from coming? 3 So once again “Farewell” to you and your wife. © Translation Ian Bent, 2013, 2022 |

Footnotes1 In Sbb B II 4419, February 15, 1898, Schenker expects to see Busoni in Vienna on March 8. In Sbb B II 4421, March 6, 1898, he is prevented from seeing him at the hotel. We do not know whether the two men actually met on March 8, but presumably Busoni was in Vienna for approximately March 6 to March 15, so it would be unlikely that they never met in that time. 2 “alles weniger als”: meaning unclear: the suggested rendering makes little sense (unless implying that she was still in bed); perhaps Schenker means “no less so.” 3 There is an unmistakeably injured air about this letter with its double “Adieu,” especially as it follows Sbb B II 4421, in which Schenker felt he was being excluded by the hotel concierge. Were the Busonis avoiding him? |
